Earrings do more work than any other piece of Indian jewellery. They sit at eye level, they read in photographs, and with most ethnic outfits a single pair is enough where a full set would be too much. This collection covers the full range - jhumkas, chandbalis, studs, drops, ear cuffs and statement pieces - in gold-plated, oxidised, silver and brass finishes.

Everything here is one size, so there is no fit decision to make. What matters instead is weight, finish and how the piece sits against your neckline.

Earring Styles Explained

Indian earring terminology overlaps and is used loosely, which makes it hard to search for what you actually want. The distinctions below are the ones that matter in practice.

Style

What it is

Wears best with

Jhumka

Bell or dome-shaped drop, often with beading

Almost anything ethnic

Jhumki

The smaller version of a jhumka

Daily wear, office

Chandbali

Crescent-shaped, from chand meaning moon

Formal ethnic, covered necklines

Bahubali jhumka

Oversized jhumka, usually with an ear chain

Weddings, heavy lehengas

Chandelier

Tiered, widening downward

Evening and party wear

Stud

Sits flat on the lobe, post and back

Office, layering, daily wear

Drop and dangler

Hangs below the lobe on a hook or chain

Versatile across occasions

Tassel

Hanging threads or chains

Contemporary and fusion outfits

Ear cuff

Clips or hooks along the ear rim

Fusion and Western outfits

A jhumka is the bell or dome-shaped drop that most people picture when they think of Indian earrings, usually with a fringe of beads or pearls around the rim. A jhumki is simply a smaller one - the distinction is size rather than construction, and the terms are often used interchangeably.

A chandbali takes its name from chand, meaning moon, and bali, meaning earring: the defining feature is the crescent shape. The style is associated with Mughal-era jewellery and remains strongest in Hyderabadi and Rajasthani traditions. Chandbalis read more formal than jhumkas and work particularly well with high or covered necklines, where the width of the crescent has room to sit.

Bahubali jhumkas are the oversized statement version, named colloquially after the film that popularised the look. They almost always come with an ear chain, for reasons covered below. At the other end, studs sit flat against the lobe and are the practical daily option, while danglers and drops cover everything in between.

Ear Chains and Weight

This is the single most useful thing to understand before buying statement earrings, and it is rarely explained.

Large jhumkas are heavy, and all of that weight hangs from the piercing. Worn for several hours the lobe stretches and aches, which is why people take them off partway through an event. The traditional solution is an ear chain, sometimes called a sahara: a fine chain that runs from the top of the earring up over the ear and hooks into the hair, transferring most of the weight off the earlobe and onto the hairline.

If a listing shows an ear chain in the images, that is a signal the piece is heavy enough to need one. Bahubali and temple-style jhumkas are almost always sold this way. If you are buying a heavy pair without a chain, plastic earring supports behind the lobe are the alternative and cost very little.

Where comfort matters more than scale, zinc alloy pieces are noticeably lighter than brass for the same visual size, and a shorter drop with a wider top gives presence without hanging weight.

Metals and Finishes

Finish

Character

Worth knowing

Gold plated

Warm gold tone over base metal

Plating wears with use, not permanent

Antique gold

Darkened gold with a matte finish

Standard for temple and bridal styles

Oxidised silver

Blackened silver-tone with high contrast

Pairs with cotton and handloom

Silver plated

Bright silver tone

Suits pastels and cooler colours

Brass

Warm yellow, heavier than alloy

Develops patina over time

Zinc alloy

Lightest option, takes plating well

Best choice if weight is a concern

Almost all fashion jewellery in this range is a plated base metal rather than solid precious metal, which is what keeps it affordable. Gold plating is a thin surface layer and will wear at contact points over time - this is normal rather than a defect, and how long it lasts depends mostly on how the piece is stored and handled. Solid silver jewellery and brass pieces behave differently: silver tarnishes but can be polished back, and brass develops a patina that some people prefer to the original finish.

One practical note on metal sensitivity: alloy and plated jewellery commonly contains nickel, which is among the most frequent causes of contact reactions to costume jewellery. If you have reacted to fashion earrings before, look for listings that specify nickel-free, or choose silver where the post material is stated. Reactions typically show as itching or redness at the piercing rather than anywhere else on the ear.

Stones and Embellishment

Kundan is a setting technique rather than a stone - glass or gemstone set into a bed of refined gold foil, producing the characteristic raised bezel with a bright rim. Most fashion jewellery uses faux kundan, which reproduces the look at a fraction of the cost. Pearl accents, usually faux, are the standard pairing with kundan and appear across pearl jewellery more widely.

Temple jewellery is a South Indian tradition using motifs drawn from temple architecture and iconography - Lakshmi figures, peacocks, lotus forms - usually in an antique gold finish. It is the traditional pairing with Kanjeevaram and other heavy silk sarees, and reads distinctly more formal than contemporary designs.

Enamel work, or meenakari, fills recessed areas with coloured glaze, which is how coloured jhumkas get their depth without stones. Mirror work and beadwork sit at the more casual end and pair naturally with cotton and handloom. Stone jewellery and beaded pieces cover the wider range.

What to Wear With What

Neckline decides earring choice more than the outfit does. A covered or high neckline leaves the ears as the only place jewellery can go, so this is where statement jhumkas and chandbalis belong. An open or wide neckline already has space for a necklace, so smaller earrings keep the two from competing. Wearing both a heavy necklace and heavy earrings is the most common styling mistake with ethnic wear.

By outfit: heavy lehengas and embroidered anarkali sets already carry visual weight, so earrings alone usually finish the look. Plain kurta sets and solid co-ords can take a fuller jewellery set. Cotton and handloom sarees sit better with oxidised silver than with gold, which tends to look mismatched against matte natural fabric.

For a complete bridal look, maang tikka, bangles and nose rings extend the same metal tone without adding to the neckline. Our roundup of the best jewellery brands covers who makes what.

Caring for Plated Jewellery

Plating wears from contact and chemicals rather than age, so a few habits extend it considerably. Put earrings on last, after perfume, hairspray and moisturiser have dried - alcohol and oils are what strip plating fastest. Take them off first, before removing makeup or washing.

Wipe each pair with a dry soft cloth after wearing to remove skin oils and perspiration, both of which are mildly acidic. Store pieces separately in airtight bags or a lined box rather than loose together, since plated surfaces scratch against each other and exposure to air accelerates tarnishing on silver and brass.

Never use water, jewellery dip or ultrasonic cleaners on plated pieces or on kundan settings. Kundan in particular is held with adhesive and foil that water lifts. Oxidised silver should not be polished with a standard silver cloth either, since the blackened finish is deliberate and polishing removes it.

Shop by Occasion

Weddings and Bridal

Temple jhumkas, chandbalis and bahubali styles with ear chains in antique or gold finish. Bridal jewellery groups the fuller sets, and our guide to what to wear to an Indian wedding covers how much jewellery each function expects.

Festive

Mid-weight jhumkas and chandbalis in gold or oxidised finish, with kundan, pearl or enamel work. These are the pieces that get the most wear, since they suit both ethnic and fusion outfits across a long festive season.

Daily and Office

Studs, jhumkis and small drops in lightweight alloy. Oxidised silver reads well with cotton kurtas and works in most workplaces where a heavy gold jhumka would not. Earrings under $20 covers the accessible end of the range.

Fusion and Western Outfits

Ear cuffs, tassel drops and geometric designs bridge Indian and Western wardrobes, and pair well with indo western dresses and solid tops. Contemporary and premium designs are grouped in premium jewellery.

FAQs: Earrings and Jhumkas

What is a jhumka?

A jhumka is a bell or dome-shaped drop earring, usually finished with a fringe of beads or pearls around the rim. It is one of the oldest and most recognisable Indian earring forms and works with almost every kind of ethnic outfit. A jhumki is the smaller version of the same shape.

What is the difference between a jhumka and a chandbali?

A jhumka is bell or dome-shaped and hangs downward. A chandbali is crescent-shaped - the name comes from chand, meaning moon - and sits wider across the ear. Chandbalis read more formal and suit covered necklines, where the width has room to show.

What are bahubali earrings?

An informal name for oversized jhumkas, popularised by the film of that name. They are large enough that they are almost always sold with an ear chain to support the weight, and are worn mainly at weddings and with heavy outfits.

What is an ear chain and do I need one?

An ear chain, or sahara, is a fine chain running from the earring over the ear into the hair, which shifts the weight off the earlobe. Heavy jhumkas are uncomfortable without support over a long event. If a listing shows a chain, the piece is heavy enough to need it.

Does gold plating wear off?

Yes. Plating is a thin surface layer over base metal and wears at contact points with use. How long it lasts depends mostly on handling - applying perfume and hairspray before putting earrings on, and storing pieces loose together, are the two things that shorten it most.

Which earrings suit a high neckline?

Statement pieces - jhumkas, chandbalis and chandeliers. A covered neckline leaves no room for a necklace, so the earrings carry the look. With open or wide necklines the reverse applies: keep earrings smaller so they do not compete with a necklace.

Which earrings go with a cotton or handloom saree?

Oxidised silver, brass or terracotta-style pieces. Gold tends to look mismatched against matte natural fabric, whereas oxidised finishes have the same understated quality. Save gold and temple styles for silk.

Are these earrings suitable for sensitive ears?

Alloy and plated jewellery commonly contains nickel, which is a frequent cause of reactions to costume jewellery. If you have reacted before, look for listings specifying nickel-free posts or choose silver where the material is stated. Reactions usually appear as itching or redness at the piercing itself.

How do I clean plated earrings?

Wipe with a dry soft cloth after each wear. Avoid water, jewellery dips and ultrasonic cleaners entirely - these strip plating and lift kundan settings, which are held with foil and adhesive. Do not polish oxidised silver with a silver cloth, since the darkened finish is intentional.

Where can I find new jewellery?

Jewellery new arrivals updates as labels deliver, and best sellers shows what is moving fastest. The full jewellery range covers necklaces, bangles, mangalsutras and more.
